More than Paper

He preferred to write these kinds of letters by hand.  The computer
was too impersonal. 

The dead were more than numbers, more than paper people created to
serve. 

The sensation of cellulose beneath his rough fingertips gave
substance to the bitter reality.  He folded the single sheet, and
signed the bottom.  Neat block letters for his designation. A
sharply rounded curve for the J, a large open O and two stilted Ls.

It seemed too simple a response to the greatest of all sacrifices. 
Where was the passion?  The anger, sorrow, and fear?  But then, paper
people did not bleed.
