Paused

He stood suspended between two breaths, between one heartbeat and
the next, while
at the end of one lash a tiny drop of frosty moisture hovered, locked
in place, unable
to fall. Unmoving, unblinking eyes staring.
At first their gaze was drawn to him, fascinated, but as the days
went by the unseeing
stare became uncomfortable and heads dropped as they passed.
And late at night, when only the creak of the age old glacier sounded
in the quiet
cavern, and lights were dimmed, their dreams were troubled by thoughts
too alien to
understand.
While around the colonel, ice settled.
